The last meeting of the ECR Steering Committee during the Polish presidency

The Republic of Poland, represented by the General Road Transport Inspectorate, took over the presidency of the Euro Contrôle Route on July 1, 2019. Urszula Nowinowska, Director of the Chief Inspector’s Office, took the office of the President of the organization. On June 25, 2020, during the Steering Committee meeting, things that were accomplished during that time have been summarized, as well as important issues related to the current activities of the ECR and the future of the ECR-EGTC were discussed. The Chief Inspector of Road Transport was represented by Deputy Chief Inspector of Road Transport Łukasz Bryła and employees of the International Cooperation Department. The Steering Committee was led by the President of ECR, Urszula Nowinowska.

“It has been almost a year since we took over the presidency from Germany. Nobody then predicted that in connection with the pandemic, the tasks, we assumed to be carried out, would be carried out in such difficult circumstances. I would like to thank everyone for the effort we have made to minimize the negative effects of COVID-19 in the road transport sector,” said Deputy Chief Inspector of Road Transport.

Despite the fact that the last meeting of the ECR Steering Committee during the Polish Presidency took place in exceptional circumstances, because in the form of video conferences, delegates actively participated in the discussions. In the first part of the meeting the current functioning of the Euro Contrôle Route were discussed. An important point of the meeting was also the development of effective solutions for the creation of a new organization, i.e. Euro Contrôle Route European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation. Budgetary and logistics issues were also raised. Finally, the Polish Presidency was summarized and the presidency was delegated to the Austrian side.

“From July 1, 2019, we set clear goals for the Polish Presidency and worked together to achieve these goals. We talk a lot about the challenges we are currently facing and we should be working actively to achieve the intended goal: increasing road safety,” started ECR President Urszula Nowinowska.

In accordance with the assumptions of the Polish Presidency, this international organization, for which the priority is to improve safety and unify control practices in road transport, was to focus, among others on activities aimed at broadly understood environmental protection. By organizing meetings of working groups, ECR is gradually striving to raise the level of knowledge of Polish and foreign inspectors in the field of detecting illegal manipulations in exhaust gas cleaning systems, unauthorized manipulations in tachographs, checking the technical condition of vehicles or illegal waste shipments. An equally important goal of the Presidency is to increase the international recognition of the organization.

Summing up the Steering Committee, Urszula Nowinowska handed the presidency over to the Austrian side, which will officially start carrying out its tasks from 1.07.2020.
